Winemakers Notes
‘Razorback’ is a word that evokes images of rugged peaks, and a harsh, but beautiful, landscape. Vintage 2018 was extraordinary in Central Otago. It was profoundly warm, but, there was also plenty of rain. This meant that the vineyards had grass in them, whereas there would normally just be dirt. It also meant that we harvested very early. The local winemakers found all of this very hard to process! The vineyard was picked on the 15th March – fully five weeks ahead of normal. In 2018 we sourced out fruit from the Wooing Tree block near the centre of Cromwell. As always, the handpicked fruit was trucked overnight to Auckland. The wine had almost three weeks on skins and was pressed to French oak (just under 20% new). Thirteen months in oak followed. Post assemblage, the wine was lightly fined, filtered and bottled.

Tasting Notes
Colour: |
Deeply coloured for a Pinot Noir, this wine has a red/purple core and a rim. |
Bouquet: |
High toned floral notes, red cherries, Black Doris plums, hints of tamarillo and a lovely background of subtle oak. |
Palate: |
Full bodied for Pinot, with firm, yet fine grained tannins and masses of sweet fruit in the mid palate. |
Cellaring
Already approachable, but we expect this wine to develop for a number of years.
