Our Hawkes Bay SV Malbec comes from fruit grown on our Red Metals Vineyard. Before we bought the property it was owned by a gentlemen by the name of St John Yorke (note however that this St John is pronounced SIN-jin).
Vintage 2012 was challenging in Hawkes Bay but our Malbec was in glorious condition at harvest. It was trucked to Auckland for vinification and barrel aging. It was bottled on 20 December 2013.
||This wine has incredible colour. A saturated black core, runs to a deep purple rim.
||Typical Malbec with masses of wild black fruits coupled with savoury hints and deliciously spicy oak.
||Firm yet fine-grained tannins balanced by loads of juicy black fruit in the mid palate. Acids are a little higher than normal in the 2013 reds and this gives the wine real vigor.
Already approachable, but we expect this wine to cellar well for a number of years.
Rounded tannins and ripe berry flavours make this wine a great accompaniment to many meat dishes such as lamb, venison, beef and game. Many rich sauces go well with this wine, as will roast garlic and vegetables.
Suggested wine list description

Independent Reviewer’s Comment
‘Very attractive on the nose; fragrant aromas of plum, blackberry, cedar and vanilla lead to a succulent palate that is rounded and beautifully weighted. Very long on the finish, the wine is upfront and intensely fruited. At its best: now to 2020.” Wine Orbit
“Generosity – a saintly quality if ever there was one – is a hallmark of this smooth, rich wine. Attractively warm and lush in texture, it has a juicy core of dark ripe fruit. It finishes with that savoury twist that is very malbec.” John Saker
