Select Vineyards Wines, Gisborne, Vermentino

Description

Winemakers Notes

Vermentino is an old variety found in Italy and France. There is very little planted in New Zealand. This wine is grown on a single row in Doug and Delwyn Bell’s vineyard just outside of Gisborne city. The row was harvested on 6th April and yielded 604kg. This is the first time we have bottled Vermentino here at Coopers Creek. We made one in 2014, but we didn’t like it, so it wasn’t bottled. In 2017 the juice was fermented and aged in two old barrels and the wine was bottled on 19th December 2017.

Analysis: Alc 13% Acid 5.9g/L Res Sugar 3g/L pH 3.39

Tasting Notes

Colour:        Pale green in the glass at bottling, but the colour will slowly deepen with time.
Bouquet:     A delightful melange of herbal notes, flowers and stonefruit.
Palate:        Wonderful minerality and deliciously saline. Perfect as an aperitif or with food.

Cellaring

Already approachable, but will cellar happily into the medium term in a cool environment.

Food Matches

Wind the clock back to 1977 and pretend that you are James Bond in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. You have just arrived at Hotel Cala de Volpe in Sardinia with Russian spy Anya Shovmeova. Park the Lotus Esprit, and wander in to the restaurant for a glass of Vermentino and a dish of seafood Fregola with saffron.
