New Releases: Reserve Syrah 2010 and SV Montepulciano 2010

Two impressive new red wines are now available, both from the outstanding 2010 vintage.

Our first ever Reserve Syrah is made from fruit from our Chalk Ridge block, just to the south of Havelock North. It is a steep, north facing amphitheatre that is strewn with fossilised limestone. We have used only the ripest fruit from the top of the hill to craft our Reserve Syrah. A tiny amount of Viognier (2.43%) from the same block was co-fermented with the Syrah to add fragrance and complexity and to help fix the colour. Vintage 2010 was a stunner and the vineyard was in excellent condition at harvest. The wine spent around 10 months in French oak (40% new) before assemblage and bottling. Having collected two Gold Medals on release, it's already a wine in demand! M ore information here.

From our Home Vineyard we're delighted to release our first Montepulciano, under the Select Vineyards label. It's a rich and deeply textured wine, offering masses of wild, ripe dark berryfruits with delightfully savoury hints. Soft, velvety tannins are balanced by loads of juicy black fruit in the mid palate. This is a wine which is seductive, smooth and very stylish; it's absurdly drinkable and immensely rewarding. Dubbed "Guido in Velvet Pants" the nickname refers to both Guido (Simon's charming Italian Greyhound who resides in his winery office each day) and an obscure, but very memorable reference to an order of Carmelite Nuns, who delighted by a new wine from their vineyard exclaimed: "It slips down the throat as easily as the Infant Jesus in velvet pants." Indeed it does.
