"Allison" Gisborne Marsanne 2013
WINE OF THE WEEK, LISTENER OCT 26th 2013 NZ's First Marsanne? Hailing from the Northern Rhone valley, full bodied and dry but with strong honey and melon characters.
The growers of this wine are Doug and Delwyn Bell. Doug’s pride and joy is his newly restored and running Allison supercharged V12 engine out of a WW2 Curtis Kittyhawk aircraft. This wine is named in Doug and Allison’s honour (we aren’t sure what Delwyn thinks about this). We believe it to be the first varietal Marsanne to be made in New Zealand. Marsanne hails from the Rhone Valley in France and loved the warm and dry conditions that typified vintage 2013 in Gisborne. The fruit was harvested in pristine condition on 21 March and started ferment in tank. It was transferred to five year old oak to finish ferment and rest on lees until the end of May 2013. The wine was bottled in June 2013.
At bottling the wine was very pale with light green tints. With time we expect that it will develop some pale gold hints.
Pure and fresh, with hints of honeysuckle and melon.
Surprisingly full bodied, with great length and presence on the palate.
We're not sure! Probably a 1 - 3 year range, but it really is a matter of wait and see.
Independent Reviewer’s Comment
“...this is a fleshy, vibrantly fruity wine with strong, ripe, citrusy, peachy flavours, lively but not high acidity and a full dry finish. A great debut for this powerful, poised wine, full of youthful vigour.” MC
